The Sewanee, Tennessee, community is mourning the passing of Kenneth Wayne Shields, who died peacefully on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the age of 83, surrounded by the love of his devoted family. His passing marks the end of a life defined by hard work, unwavering faith, and deep devotion to those he loved most.
Born on May 19, 1943, in Cowan, Tennessee, Kenneth was the son of the late Grady and Anna Clair (Barnes) Shields. A lifelong resident of Franklin County, he built a reputation as a skilled welder, mechanic, and hardworking businessman. Throughout his career, he co-owned the Sewanee Sawmill alongside Houston King, operated heavy equipment for an asphalt company, and later worked as a welder at Tek-Tank, where he remained until his retirement. His mechanical expertise made him a well-known and trusted figure in the community, with many relying on his knowledge and willingness to help.
Outside of work, Kenneth found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time outdoors, whether mowing the yard, cutting trees with his chainsaw, or fishing. In his younger years, he enjoyed drag racing, a passion that reflected his adventurous spirit. Country music often filled his home, and he rarely missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune.
Above all else, Kenneth treasured his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the center of his world, and some of his happiest memories came from picking them up from school, caring for them, and sharing everyday moments together. His gentle personality and willingness to say “oh, okay” to nearly every request became a cherished family memory, symbolizing his generous heart and unconditional love.
Those who knew Kenneth remember him as a humble, soft-spoken man with a forgiving nature who always sought the good in others. His quiet strength, kindness, and steadfast faith earned him the respect and admiration of everyone fortunate enough to know him. A dedicated member of Sherwood Church of Christ, Kenneth lived a life grounded in Christian values and service to others.
He was preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Hailey Brooke Shields. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 65 years, Geneva Shields; his sons, Greg Shields and Brian Shields and wife Christy; grandchildren Andrew (Rachel) Shields, Daniel (Megan) Shields, and Hannah (Andrew) Bowen; great-grandchildren Baylor, Grayson, Cohen, Riley, and Gracie; and a cherished family friend, Ginger Gulley.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in Winchester, Tennessee. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Bro. Dewayne Stevens officiating. Kenneth will be laid to rest at Franklin Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Sherwood Church of Christ.
